Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept our respectful humble obeisances in the dust of your lotus feet. All glories to Srila Prabhupada! All glorious to Your Divine Grace!

I have been meditating on a few verses of Sri Gurvastakam where the glories of the spiritual master are enumerated by Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura. It is mentioned in the first verse:

samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-
tranaya karunya-ghanaghanatvam
praptasya kalyana-gunarnavasya
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam

“The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.”

The auspicious path of devotional service begins when one comes in contact with a bona fide representative of the Personality of Godhead. In this world, people are passing their time in the vain pursuit of trying to be materially happy being influenced by the modes of passion and ignorance. They think that fulfilling the demands of the mind and senses gives one joy and happiness and that is how conditioned souls have programmed themselves. But the nature of happiness in the lower modes of material nature is like a mirage–it is only good in making false promises without any substance in it.

In the eighteenth chapter of Bhagavad-gita, Krsna has described the nature of happiness in the mode of passion (Bhagavad-gita 18.38):

“That happiness which is derived from contact of the senses with their objects and which appears like nectar at first but poison at the end is said to be of the nature of passion.”

And in the third chapter, addressing Arjuna’s question about the cause of sinful actions, Krsna mentions (Bhagavad-gita 3.37):

“It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born of contact with the material mode of passion and later transformed into wrath, and which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world.”

A conditioned soul, entangled in the network of modes of passion and ignorance, continues to indulge in sinful activities, mistakenly believing them to be beneficial and a source of happiness. However, the ultimate result is suffering—both in this life and in the next. For one who is thus entrapped, what hope remains?

The hope is only the divine grace emanating from Krsna. As mentioned in the Sri Gurvastakam verse: spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. The blazing fire of material existence cannot be extinguished by one’s own intelligence and efforts. It requires divine intervention. Krsna, through His transparent representatives, helps in putting off the fire of material existence. As Srila Cakravarti Thakura explains, the spiritual master receives benedictions from the ocean of mercy and distributes that mercy to the conditioned souls, thereby helping them attain release from their entrapment. The process of release is the path of pure devotional service. In this world, many things are available and can be bought or manufactured, but the path of pure devotional service cannot be attained unless it is given by the representative of Krsna.

It is also mentioned in the third stanza:

sri-vigraharadhana-nitya-nana-
srngara-tan-mandira-marjanadau
yuktasya bhaktams ca niyunjato ‘pi
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam

“The spiritual master is always engaged in the temple worship of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. He also engages his disciples in such worship. They dress the Deities in beautiful clothes and ornaments, clean Their temple, and perform other similar worship of the Lord. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.”

A spiritual master not only engages wholeheartedly in the devotional service of the Lord but also guides and inspires others to do the same. By leading through his own personal example, he demonstrates how to worship the Lord with genuine love and devotion. It is only through such devotional service that a fallen soul can begin to realize the higher, more subtle truths—truths that remain inconceivable to those still bound by material conditioning. Thus, the spiritual master saves a soul from the entrapment of conditioned life and brings him to the lotus feet of the Lord.

We have been immensely fortunate that you intervened in our lives and gave us the opportunity to engage in the devotional service of the Lord. Your personal example, like a shining beacon, has always guided and inspired us to move forward in our spiritual journey. Even as we continue to struggle and find it difficult to go deeper in our realization of bhakti, your words of encouragement have helped us stay on the path. Without your support, we might have given up long ago.

You have provided us with all the essential elements necessary for our devotional growth—association with devotees, hari-katha, the holy name, and your own invaluable personal association. We are deeply grateful for all these precious gifts. We pray that we may embrace this process of devotional service with increasing sincerity and gratitude, and continue to march forward towards the ultimate perfection of human life. By Your Divine Grace’s mercy this goal can surely be achieved, however far this may appear to us currently.

Please accept our prostrated humble obeisances in the dust of your divine lotus feet.

Your aspiring servants,
